Weekly Writing Assignment

There is an assignment due each Friday except on quiz dates and holidays.  This will be a short answer to a questions(s) that pertains to that weeks work.  In some cases it will require you to look at the "More Learning Page."   Below you will find the weekly assignment. 

Assignment # 1 - Due Friday September 4th

1. Draw a diagram, and label important points of how a molecule of glucose is converted into ATP

2. How many molecules of ATP are created from one molecule of glucose?

3. Using the links on the More Learning Page

 - Calculate your BMR 
 - Calculate your daily caloric needs
 - Calculate your ideal body weight

4. Keep a record of the food you eat in a one day period and calculate the amount of calories you ate that day.  Are you eating too much?  Are you overweight?

 

Assignment # 2 - Due Friday September 11th


1. What is the cause of diabetes?

2. What are the features of type I and type II diabetes?

3. Look at the list of food that you created earlier.  Which food had the highest glycemic index?  What was it's gylcemic index?

4. Go the "Bone and Trauma" page under the More Learning page and look at the several fracture images on that page.  Describe the first and second fracture using the chart at the top of the page. Just write a simple sentence. The fracture might be described with several descriptions.  That is one fracture might be both comminuted and spiral.

5. What is the difference between a shoulder separation and a shoulder dislocation?

6. What are the names of the 4 bones that make up the human knee joint?

7. Name the major ligaments of the knee.  There are four of them.



Assignment #3  - Due Friday September 25th

Sit down and relax for at least 1 minute and then take your pulse.  Count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply that number by 4 to get the beats per minute.  Write down your results.  Now, while seated, take 3 – 4 very deep breaths, now take your pulse.  Write down the results.  Now, lie down for about 1 minute – then stand up quickly and again take your pulse.  Write down the results.

1.  Why does your pulse rise when you take a deep breath?
2.  Why does your pulse rise when you stand up after lying down?
3.  Name the two valves located in the left ventricle.  What is the purpose of each of these valves?
4.  Take your blood pressure at least twice - at different times.  You can do this at home or at a grocery store.  Record them, the day of the week and the time of the day.
5.  What is the meaning of the diastolic blood pressure?
6.  What is the meaning of the systolic blood pressure?
7.  What is considered to be a normal blood pressure - both systolic and diastolic?


Assignment #4 - Due Friday October 2nd
1.  What is the purpose of the foramen ovale in a baby in a mother's uterus?

2.  Briefly describe what happens which a baby takes his/her first breath.

3.  What is the cardiac output?  What is the typical cardiac output of an adult?

 

 


Assignment #5 - Due Friday October 23
1.  Go the the Lung page in the More Learning Section.  Look athe injured patient with the 'flail chest.'  What is happening?  Why is the chest wall moving in and out like that.

2.  What is a pnuemothorax?  Draw a diagram like the one you saw in class.

3.  Briefly describe the path that an oxygen molecule must take to go from you nose to muscle.  What roll does conveciton, diffusion and hemoglobin play?
