STUDY GUIDE FOR EXAM 1

There will be several multiple choice questions as well.  Also there will be several True or false questions.   The study guide below will get you ready for the exam.

Be able to name the three stages that convert glucose into ATP.  You should be able to understand where ATP is created in each stage.  You should also understand the basics of each stage and the purpose of each stage.  You should understand the end products as well.  You should understand how fat is produced and under what condition it happens.  You should understand how fat is used and under what conditions.

 

Heat is the energy that is transferred, there is no such thing as cold in science

 

Where in the body is sugar stored

Know the oxygen debt and what compounds are used and created.


Understand the basic metabolic rate and what three factors that affect the BMR. Thyroid gland is the most important, then body surface area and body temperature

You should understand frostbite, what causes it and the treatment.

You should be able to understand how heat is lost from the body.


Know the treatment of hypothermia and hyperthermia and frostbite.  Rapid rewarming is important for frostbite.

 

What happens to the body during exercise?  Heart rate increases, systolic blood pressure goes up but diastolic pressure remains mostly the same.

 

Bypass surgery works because the food (sugar) bypasses the duodenum where sugar is mostly absorbed and thus helping people to lose weight.

 

Exercise creates more mitochondria in the cells, increases the amount of capillaries and strengthens the heart muscle.  It also makes existing muscle fibers larger – not more fibers


Know a little bit about diabetes, how it is caused.  I listed type I, type II and Gestational.  Know the basics of each.


Humans stand upright (bipedal) in part, in order for them to run and outlast animals.  The human stride is longer than any animal that runs on all 4 legs to help conserve energy
